An exceptional work by the hand of Arsène-Hippolyte Florent Rivey. The expression on the faces and fabric expression of the baroque costumes is of unprecedented quality. A work of this quality and size can only be found in museums. Rivey was a French painter, born October 2, 1838 in Caen and died October 2, 1903 in Paris.

The depiction shows a chess game with spectators, beautifully rendered in a room with 17-century appearance.

Rivey had a turbulent career, winning many painting awards and painting on commission for Napoleon III. His work is represented in all major French and international museums
